Practice History

Buckingham Equine Vet (BEV) is a veterinary practice born out of a long history of horse care in the Buckingham area.

A veterinary practice was first set up in the Buckingham in the 1940’s during the Second World War when a branch of the Bicester based vets was set up in Maids Moreton by one of their veterinary assistants, Ken Scott.

In 1957 Ken bought the Practice for himself and the following year he employed Stewart Hastie as his assistant. At that time the Practice was very much a farm animal orientated business, with only one equine client on its books, a working cart horse.

Ken Scott retired in 1965 and Stewart Hastie bought the business. Over the next few years Stewart slowly increased the equine side of the business, drawing in eventing and dressage clients as these pastimes grew.

In 1978 he employed a fresh faced Cambridge graduate by the name of Jane Nixon. Over the next decade both the small animal and equine clientele of the Practice expanded and in 1988 it became known as Nixon & Marshall, with premises based at Overton on the edge of Maids Moreton.

Jane and Stewart formed Nixon Equine Veterinary Practice in 2005, a solely equine vet enterprise with purpose built facilities located at Overton Fields. Philip Ivens was employed as a veterinary assistant in 2009 having just previously completed an equine medicine residency at the Royal Veterinary College near London; and Andrew Wallace employed in 2010 after working in equine specific vet practices in the UK and New Zealand.

Buckingham Equine Vets was formed in September 2011 with premises still at Overton Fields in Maids Moreton, and with Philip and Andrew becoming co-directors, and Jane a consultant.

In early 2013 the Practice formed a partnership with one of the world's leading academic veterinary institutions, The Royal Veterainry College (RVC). This facilitated a re-location to a modern, well equipped purpose-built equine clinic on the edge of the village of Wicken, between Buckingham and Milton Keynes. The facility allowed a further advance in the level of equine veterinary care that has been the tradition of the practice and its forebears for over 70 years.
